ARMSTRONG PROJECT
Portola Valley, California
Before A 3,500 square foot single level rancher.
Client Needs Change the floor plan to meet functional and qualitative family needs and update amenities without going over the top. Stylistically, refine and update the rancher by using styles representative of modern living in the area.
Approach We added 500 square feet of living area to the existing home by extending the existing garage and Master Bedroom. We completely shelled and rebuilt the structural framing. We removed most of the existing roof structure and reframed the house to accommodate the revised footprint and design. We upgraded many of the exterior and interior walls to bring them up to current building codes, rearranged interior walls for a new design and better flow, and we replaced all the electrical wiring and plumbing. The finishes we used were high quality and elegant, in order to maximize the aesthetic appeal of the home and offer up its contemporary style.
After A 4,000 square foot-plus contemporary home.
Exterior: We replaced the rustic and worn wood shake roof with a more refined asphalt composition roof. We chose single light Andersen windows to increase aesthetic value and energy efficiency, and replaced the stucco with redwood siding on the exterior. A carefully-chosen paint color scheme further enhanced the home's aesthetic value.
Interior: Kitchen amenities include: granite slab counters over custom maple cabinetry, stainless steel commercial grade appliances, and a perfectly positioned skylight to welcome the natural sunlight.
The strip oak hardwood floor was matched to existing throughout the house, and functional, yet elegant recessed low voltage lighting was added to complete the update of the home. The Family Room adjoining the Kitchen is spacious, bright, and airy, with an intriguing blend of fine woodwork and modern furniture and artwork.
Accentuating the clean lines of this contemporary whole-house remodel, the walls throughout are smooth with bullnose corners, and are adorned top and bottom with crown mouldings and baseboard. In the Master Bath, marble tile creates an elegant floor and built-in shower. The vanities are graced with marble slab tops. A frameless shower enclosure makes the statement that the house has made a distinct departure from the era in which it was built. A cherry wood-appointed study/office provides a functional as well as aesthetically pleasing workspace.
