TUDOR-STYLE HOUSE GETS COMPLETE MAKE-OVER
Palo Alto, California
Before
A 2,300 square foot single level Tudor.
Client Needs
The homeowner wanted to update a 1920's era Tudor-style house. Their wish-list called for modern amenities while adding square footage to accommodate the needs of their growing family. We were to maintain the original character of the house inside and out.
Approach
We added 700 square feet of living area to the existing home via an extension to the rear of the first story and used the large attic space of the second story for a Master Suite. Our team completely shelled and reworked the structural framing. We removed most of the existing roof structure and reframed to accommodate the new footprint and design. We brought many of the exterior and interior walls up to current building code, moved interior walls to create a completely new interior, and replaced electrical wiring and plumbing. We enlarged and deepened the basement utility area to allow for a "craftsman" shop, exercise area and additional storage.
Exterior: A new asphalt composition roof replaces the worn wood shingle roof. Kolbe-Kolbe true divided light windows were installed on most of the house to increase energy efficiency and aesthetic value (compared with grille over glass, the look-alike alternative). The entire exterior was painted in a new color scheme to maximize aesthetic value.
Interior: Kitchen amenities include: granite slab counters over custom maple cabinetry, stainless steel commercial grade appliances, and a perfectly positioned skylight to welcome the natural sunlight. The strip oak hardwood floor was matched to existing throughout the house, and functional yet elegant recessed low voltage lighting was added to complete the update of the home. The walls throughout are simulated old world plaster with bullnose corners that are adorned top and bottom with crown mouldings and baseboard. The Master Bath marble tile creates an elegant floor and built-in shower while vanities are graced with marble slab tops. A frameless shower enclosure makes the statement that the house is a distinct departure from the era in which it was originally built. An added hardwood staircase with wrought iron railings serves as the way to ascend to the Master retreat. Its style and character make it appear as though it has always been there.
After
