COMFORTABLY ELEGANT RANCH REMODEL

Portola Valley, California

Before

A 1954 ranch style house in a semi-rural location that suited the owners who both come from a rural environment.

Client Needs

Change the floor plan to meet functional and qualitative family needs and update amenities without going over the top. Stylistically, refine and update the rancher by using styles representative of modern living in the area.

Approach

Gut the house and add 521 square feet to the existing 3,800 square feet.

After

Kitchen: Relocate and enlarge the small, dark and narrow kitchen. The new kitchen and family room take advantage of the woodsy setting in back, by opening onto towering redwoods and a running creek. Both rooms are bathed in light from added skylights.

Guest Bedroom and Home Office: Owners needed a bedroom for visiting grandparents and functioning home office that they would share. The clever solution combined the two by adding a pull-down wall bed, which was made part of the custom built-in cabinetry.

A Blend of Materials: A variety of products from other countries add interest and blend well together, such as Vanity slab from Greece and marble tile from France in master bath; Slate in front entry and fireplace surround from China; Eucalyptus flooring from Australia.
